Situated on the India-Bangladesh border in the Bongaon subdivision area of North 24 Parganas district, Petrapole is the busiest and largest land port in South and Southeast Asia. Connected by National Highway 35, popularly known as Jessore Road, and by rail, the Petrapole check post has to handle a huge volume of traffic.
Reproductive child health programIn mid 2002, Bhoruka opened a center to intervene in the health status of the women and children of Bongaon with financial support from the European Commission. The Petrapole center aims at reaching underpriviledged women in 20 villages. The center has got comprehensive support from the officials of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, North 24 Parganas, and from the panchayat and sub-divisional levels.
Truckers Intervention Program:

Truckers intervention programAround 5000 trucks a month carrying vegetables, food grains, etc. into Bangladesh ply on this highway. Truckers wait at least 7 days for clearance from different government offices. Like any international border, Petrapole too is vulnerable to some typical problems, especially HIV / AIDS. To minimise this, Bhoruka started a prevention programme for the truckers in 1995 under the national programme Healthy Highway Project. This project has been funded by West Bengal State AIDS Prevention and Control Society since 1 April,2001.
For successful implementation, the same services needed to be launched on both sides of the border. BHORUKA joined hands with CARE-Bangladesh to minimise the level of vulnerability. In the first step Bhoruka successfully completed a cross-border study on vulnerability with CARE-Bangladesh.
